Give recycling the green light

‘Give recycling the green light’ is an environmental initiative implemented by The Light in 2008. The aim of the initiative is to improve the centre’s green business practices and with the help of the carbon trust, The Light is working towards reducing its carbon footprint by 1338.7 tonnes of CO2 per annum over the next two years.

The initiative has so far achieved significant improvements to internal waste management, with 88% of all waste now being recycled, which accounts for a total of 642 tones of recycled waste over the last 12 months.

In 2008 we reduced the annual weight of Light Style magazine from 14820kg to 1995kg saving 12,825 kilograms of paper (86.54%). If you were to lay down each page of the magazine that has been removed it would stretch 300 miles in distance.

In a bid to become greener all our new marketing collateral is produced on 100% recycled paper and within the centre we now provide customers with recycled pens.

Green Apple Environmental AwardMore recently, in recognition for our commitment to environmental best practice The Light has been awarded a Green Apple Environment Award!

Did you know? In the last 12 months The Light has recycled 642 tonnes of waste, that’s the equivalent of 80 double decker buses! *one bus equals 8 tonnes Did you know? If we laid all the paper we have saved from Light Style magazine in 2008 end to end it would reach from The Light to Penzance!

Caring for the community

‘Give recycling the green light’ also helps to raise funds for a local charity, Meanwood Valley Urban Farm through the sale of a recycled shopping bag. Shoppers at the centre can help do their bit for charity and the environment by purchasing one of the bags, which are available from selected retailers throughout the centre and at the Customer Services Suite. The bag costs just £2 and all proceeds go towards the care of the animals at the Meanwood Valley Urban Farm.
